COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTRF) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says 11 people were killed in eight fatal crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday reporting period, which ran from midnight Wednesday, Nov. 26, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30.
Preliminary reports show that at least two of the deadly crashes involved impaired drivers. During the five-day period, OSHP troopers made 281 impaired driving arrests and issued 38 citations for drug-related offenses.
Of the fatalities where seat belts were available, three victims were not wearing one. Although seat belt use is a secondary violation under Ohio law, troopers enforced zero tolerance during traffic stops and issued 462 safety belt citations during the reporting period.
In total, troopers responded to 766 crashes, cited 287 drivers for distracted driving, and assisted 1,572 motorists.
The Highway Patrol continues to urge drivers to report unsafe behavior by calling #677 to help keep Ohio roads safe.
