MIAMI — A 15-year-old girl has been arrested after a violent attack at Miami Northwestern Senior High School left a classmate hospitalized, according to the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
Jail records indicate the teen faces one count of third-degree felony battery.
The incident occurred Monday morning inside a school bathroom. Officers said a security guard was escorting the teen to the main office when another officer found the victim, 17-year-old Arianda Sharpton, bleeding from a large wound on her forehead. Sharpton was transported to Jackson Pediatrics Center for treatment.
According to the arrest report, the teen told police that the victim had struck her friend, who retaliated with a Stanley cup. The teen admitted joining the fight, hitting the victim twice with a trumpet, grabbing her hair, punching her several times, and kicking her after she fell.
Sharpton’s mother, Nicole Luster, said her daughter was attacked around 8 a.m., required stitches, and was especially at risk because she suffers from epilepsy. “She said someone hit her in the head with a Stanley cup. Then someone took a tuba and hit her in the head again. When she knew anything, it was eight of them on top of her,” Luster said. Police later clarified that three girls were involved.
Sharpton said the fight began after she tried to stand up to a girl who was teasing her. “Anything could have happened to me at that moment,” she said.
A Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokesperson confirmed the district is aware of the altercation and said the students involved are being disciplined under the Code of Student Conduct. Sharpton is recovering at home and will not be returning to the school.
