17-Year-Old Urbana High School Student Arrested After Alleged School Threat

ILLINOIS — Authorities arrested a 17-year-old Urbana High School student Wednesday after he allegedly threatened to “shoot up the school,” according to police.

The Urbana Police Department said the threat followed a confrontation with other students and was overheard by school personnel, who immediately alerted law enforcement. The incident took place near Vine and Oregon Streets around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.

Officers quickly located the student and began an investigation. A search of his home turned up no weapons. Police confirmed the threat happened off school grounds and emphasized there was no evidence of firearms at Urbana High School.

“Throughout the investigation, Urbana Police worked closely with Urbana School District officials to ensure the safety of students and staff,” the department stated.

Because of his age, authorities have not released further identifying information. They also reminded the public that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477, online, or through the P3 Tips mobile app.
