Miami-Dade deputies: 19-year-old man confesses to several robberies after armed carjacking in Opa-locka

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. — A 19-year-old man confessed to several robberies in Miami-Dade County after a carjacking in Opa-locka on Sunday, according to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy’s report.

A victim told deputies he was cleaning his car Sunday morning at the Chevron gas station at 2200 NW 95 St. when two gunmen stole his wallet and his Ford, according to records.

Using the victim’s Ford app, a deputy located the stolen vehicle near Northwest 100 Street and 23 Avenue and approached it, records show.

The driver — later identified as Barry A. Wells — crashed into a pole before he and a passenger jumped out and ran, according to the arrest report.

Deputies set up a perimeter, and a deputized dog working with a detective found Wells hiding in a backyard near Northwest 101 Street and 23 Avenue. Deputies also seized his gun, according to the report.

While at the M-DSO robbery bureau, Wells “confessed to the robbery in question, along with multiple robberies that occurred within Miami-Dade County,” a deputy wrote in the arrest report.

Miami-Dade inmate records show Wells was booked Sunday evening at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained on Monday afternoon.

Miami-Dade court records show prosecutors charged Wells with armed robbery carjacking and resisting arrest without violence. A judge ordered his pre-trial detention.

Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Milton Hirsch was set to preside over the case.
