2 Killed in Florida Turnpike Crash in Davie, FHP Says

DAVIE, Fla. — One person was killed and another injured in a crash on the Florida Turnpike in Broward County early Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Officials reported that a Mercedes-Benz SUV was stopped in the southbound center lane near Interstate 595 in Davie when a tractor-trailer, also traveling in the center lane, was unable to avoid it. The tractor-trailer struck the back of the SUV, pushing it into a southeasterly direction and into a concrete median wall.

The SUV’s driver, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized with serious injuries. A passenger, identified by FHP as a 36-year-old woman from Miami, died at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver, a 53-year-old man from Miami, was not injured.

FedEx, the company associated with the tractor-trailer, released a statement saying, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends who had loved ones involved in this tragic accident. Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities in this investigation.”

The crash caused major delays during the Friday morning commute as several lanes were closed for investigation. The incident remains under investigation.
