A 7-year-old girl riding her bicycle was killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck in the Florida Keys, and the driver may face criminal charges, according to state troopers.
The crash happened around 2:50 p.m. as a 68-year-old man was driving his Ford F-250 out of the Valero gas station near Boot Key at 7301 Overseas Highway in Marathon, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Authorities did not identify the driver.
Troopers said the girl and her mother were riding their bicycles across the gas station entrance as the man was preparing to make a right turn. Their paths crossed, and the truck struck the child.
The girl was wearing a helmet but died from the impact, authorities said.
Investigators noted that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and charges are pending.
