SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) announced a delay in fall trout stocking because unusually warm water temperatures have prevented lakes and ponds from cooling sufficiently. Trout are at risk of high mortality if stocked in waters warmer than 68 degrees.
IDNR plans to begin stocking early catch-and-release sites as soon as water temperatures drop, aiming to complete the process by October 31. Anglers can check updates on IDNR’s ifishillinois.org website and social media channels.
Although the official fall trout season opens Saturday, October 18, trout may not be present at many sites on opening day, affecting early-season catch-and-release opportunities across the state.
IDNR biologists are monitoring water conditions closely and will stock catchable trout once temperatures are safe. Hatchery staff will integrate early-season fish into the regular fall stocking schedule once conditions improve.
Anglers must have an Illinois fishing license and inland trout stamp, available at IDNR license locations, bait shops, sporting goods stores, or online. For specific site regulations, anglers should check with individual stocking locations, as not all sites open at 5 a.m. on opening day.
