NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Tragedy struck Newburgh Thursday morning when an 11-year-old boy was fatally shot while playing with friends.
Police were called to a home on North Miller Street around 8:17 a.m.. Upon arrival, officers found the child dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
Sources told News 12 the shooting occurred as children were playing with a handgun. The weapon was recovered at the scene, but it remains unclear how the children obtained the gun or who fired it. The boy’s mother reportedly called 911 in a panic, prompting emotional support for dispatchers due to the distressing call.
A heavy police presence remained at the multifamily home for hours as Newburgh Police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, ATF, and FBI gathered evidence. Police tape surrounded the street, and forensic teams documented the scene.
Neighbors expressed shock and sadness.
“I would just see the kids playing around with other kids and their mom. It’s just sad,” said neighbor Edgar Vasquez.
For safety, Newburgh schools were initially placed on secure lockout, though the district later lifted it. After-school activities were canceled.
Police have not released the child’s name and did not indicate whether anyone is in custody as the investigation continues.
“It’s just sad. I don’t know how to explain this. I can’t even imagine the mom,” said Etelvina Sevilla, a neighbor.
