Pritzker Awards $18.4 Million in Grants to Build 25 New EV Charging Stations

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Attorney General Kwame Raoul and the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that $18.4 million in grants will fund 25 new electric vehicle charging stations along interstate highway corridors.

The second round of funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program advances Illinois’ goal of registering 1 million electric vehicles by 2030, according to the governor’s office.

Under the 2021 bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Illinois will receive $148 million in total to build out an EV charging network — first along interstates and later at local sites. The first round of $25.3 million funded construction of 37 charging stations.

In May, Raoul and 16 other state attorneys general sued the Federal Highway Administration, accusing it of withholding the remainder of appropriated funds. A judge ordered the release of that money in June, the governor’s office said.

Seven of the 25 new stations — all but one in downstate Illinois — and their grant amounts include:

  • Pontiac: $787,500 to Rivian Automotive Inc., Wally’s, 1 Holiday Road.

  • Bloomington: $910,287 to Francis Energy Charging LLC, Eric’s Too Family Restaurant and Lounge, 921 Maple Hill Road.

  • Okawville: $801,840 to Universal EV LLC, Dairy Queen, 1504 E. Frontage Road.

  • Effingham: $649,702 to EVgo Services LLC, Crossroads Plaza North, 1304 Thelma Keller Ave.

  • Champaign: $555,577 to Electrify America LLC, Meijer, 2401 N. Prospect Ave.

  • Springfield: $850,304 to Universal EV LLC, Midtown Inn, 3125 Wide Track Drive.

  • Gurnee: $599,351 to Tesla Inc., Target, 6601 Grand Ave.
