Illinois Seniors Face Fewer Drug Plans and Higher Medicare Premiums in 2026

The Illinois Department of Aging (IDoA) is reminding Medicare beneficiaries to review their coverage during the 2025 Open Enrollment Period, running October 15 through December 7. This annual period allows seniors to compare plans, switch coverage, or make changes to ensure their healthcare needs are met for the coming year.

Fewer Choices and Rising Costs
According to the state’s Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP), 2026 will bring significant changes:

  • There will be fewer Medicare Part D drug plans available.

  • Some premiums have doubled, making it crucial for beneficiaries to review their notices carefully.

  • Four drug plans will offer $0 premiums, providing cost-saving options for those on a tight budget.

SHIP Director Sandy Leith emphasized that coverage and costs can change annually, so reviewing plan details is essential to avoid gaps or unexpected increases.

Free Help Through SHIP
SHIP provides free, unbiased counseling from trained volunteers to assist beneficiaries, caregivers, and families in evaluating options. Counseling is available in person or online, helping seniors make informed decisions.

For those who change plans, new coverage begins January 1, 2026. Assistance is available via:

  • Visiting a local SHIP site

  • Using Medicare’s Plan Finder

  • Calling 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY: 877-486-2048)

Beneficiaries are urged to review their letters and plan options carefully to ensure coverage meets their medical and financial needs.
