A 49-year-old Florida woman, identified as Janet Edwards, has been charged with neglect of an elderly or disabled adult and battery on a person 65 or older after allegedly locking her 77-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, in her bedroom and refusing to change her soiled Pampers.
According to the arrest affidavit, Edwards told her grandchildren and adult son that “she’s going to learn” after the senior repeatedly soiled herself. Investigators say the victim was found with feces on her hands and lying on an air mattress in a bedroom with no electricity, locked from the outside.
“The defendant said on five occasions she has seen the victim with feces in her hands and consuming it,” the affidavit states.
The woman’s adult son reportedly confronted Edwards after seeing his grandmother in distress and asked her to clean her up. Edwards allegedly refused, saying the victim needed to “learn her lesson”. Text messages provided to police by Edwards’ adult daughter showed the grandmother holding feces while Edwards responded that she “smelled s— and was going back to bed.”
Edwards told investigators she was upset or frustrated, and denied ever physically hitting her mother, despite allegations from her children of slapping and neglect.
Following the investigation, Edwards was taken into custody and booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She was released and ordered to stay away from her mother, with her next court date set for Dec. 19.
