Woman Killed, Child Airlifted After Foggy Crash on U.S. 67 in Bettendorf

A woman was killed and two others were injured Friday morning when a pickup truck collided with a semi on U.S. 67 in Bettendorf, Iowa, according to police.

Authorities said dense fog likely played a major role in the crash, which happened around 8:30 a.m. in the 6800 block of State Street. Police reported that the pickup struck a semi-truck as it exited a business and turned onto the highway.

Inside the pickup were a 43-year-old woman, a 41-year-old man, and a 9-year-old child. The woman died at the scene, while the man was taken to a local hospital. The child was airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City for treatment. The semi driver was not injured.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those involved in this tragedy,” said Bettendorf Police Chief Doug Scott. “Preliminarily, we believe the lack of visibility caused by the fog was a major contributing factor.”

The crash shut down U.S. 67 between Grant Street and I-80 for more than two hours before reopening around 11 a.m.

Scott thanked those who reported the crash and helped at the scene, adding, “Our thoughts are with those who were injured.”

Bettendorf Fire and Police Departments, Medic Ambulance, and the Iowa Department of Transportation responded to the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
