Grant Boosts Berkshire Mobile Farmers Market to Combat Food Insecurity

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) — A $4,500 grant from Greylock Insurance Agency, Arbella Insurance Foundation, and Greylock Federal Credit Union will help Berkshire Grown expand its Berkshire Mobile Farmers Market, an effort aimed at reducing food insecurity across Berkshire County.

The funding comes as 39% of county residents face some level of food insecurity — with children experiencing even higher rates statewide.

“Before you can think about insurance and other forms of financial health, you have to first meet your most vital needs, like feeding yourself and your family,” said Lori Goodell, Senior Vice President at Greylock Insurance Agency.

The Berkshire Mobile Farmers Market sources fresh, local produce from over 50 area farms and delivers it to low-income, underserved, and rural communities throughout the Berkshires. It offers a tiered payment system, accepts SNAP and Massachusetts Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) benefits, and allows shoppers to pay what they can afford.

“Many areas, like the hill towns and Pittsfield’s inner city, lack nearby, walkable grocery stores or pantries,” explained Katie Rubright, Market Manager.

The initiative particularly benefits seniors, children, and residents of Environmental Justice neighborhoods. Margaret Moulton, Executive Director of Berkshire Grown, said the program also reinforces the vital role of local agriculture in sustaining the state’s food supply and economy.

This community-driven partnership showcases how local businesses and nonprofits can work together to combat hunger while supporting regional farmers in the Berkshires.
