Tropical Storm Sonia Spins in the Pacific, No Threat to Land MI

Tropical Storm Sonia continued swirling Monday in the Pacific Ocean, posing no threat to land, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The storm, which formed over the weekend, was located about 975 miles (1,570 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. Sonia carried maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was moving westward.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, and forecasters predicted a gradual weakening over the next couple of days. Sonia is expected to dissipate into a post-tropical remnant low by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Sonia’s development came as Hurricane Melissa intensified in the Caribbean Sea, threatening Jamaica with catastrophic flooding.
