Fatal RV Crash Under Investigation in Defiance County

DEFIANCE COUNTY, Ohio (WANE) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Defiance Post is investigating a fatal RV crash that occurred late Monday morning.

According to a press release, the crash happened around 11:21 a.m. when a woman driving east on State Route 249 failed to yield at a stop sign and was struck by an RV traveling north on U.S. 127. Both vehicles veered off the northeast side of the intersection, causing the car to overturn.

The RV driver, identified as Jay Shaffer, 61, was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The woman and a child passenger in the car were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminded drivers to always stop and yield at stop signs and to wear seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.
