Gov. Pillen urges legislature to fund K-12 education through the state to lower property taxes

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen is renewing his push for the state legislature to take major action on property tax reform, calling for the state to assume full responsibility for funding K-12 education.

Speaking with News Talk, Pillen said that shifting school funding from property taxpayers to the state is the only effective way to achieve lasting tax relief.

“We have to make sure that we can fund K-12 education from the state instead of property taxpayers,” Pillen said. “It was never intended for that to happen. We have had nothing but tax shifts from sales tax to property tax.”

Pillen emphasized that broadening the state’s sales tax would be key to the plan and warned that if lawmakers fail to act, voters could take matters into their own hands through ballot initiatives.

“If we do not get that done, the people are going to speak with ballot initiatives, and that is not the way to fix this problem,” he said.

Pillen said reducing property taxes will remain one of his top priorities during the upcoming legislative session.
