Lake County, Florida, Swamped by Over 19 Inches of Rain in Rare Flash Flood Emergency

A rare Flash Flood Emergency was declared in Lake County on Sunday night after more than 19 inches of rain fell within hours, inundating roads and swamping cars across Central Florida.

The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued the alert as severe thunderstorms swept through the Gulf Coast, the same storm system that caused widespread power outages in Texas over the weekend. By early Monday morning, State Route 46 near Sanford was completely submerged, and sinkholes opened near Eustis, according to local authorities.

Several roads in Eustis, Mount Dora, and Titusville were closed due to flooding, though no injuries were reported. Despite the heavy rainfall, Lake County schools remained open on a normal schedule Monday.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for parts of east-central Florida, including Orlando and Daytona Beach, through Monday evening, as additional storms are expected later in the day.
