Man killed in Sumter County crash caused by passing driver, troopers say

A 42-year-old Palm Harbor man died Thursday morning in a head-on crash caused by another driver attempting to pass a vehicle on State Road 471 near Tarrytown, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened around 8:25 a.m. when a 32-year-old Lakeland man driving a Nissan Rogue northbound crossed into the southbound lane while trying to pass another car. His vehicle collided nearly head-on with the Palm Harbor man’s Volkswagen sedan.

The Palm Harbor man was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said.

The crash prompted authorities to shut down traffic on State Road 471 for most of the morning as troopers investigated.
