Davenport Woman Charged with Felony for Library Books Overdue Since 2012

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A 48-year-old woman from Davenport is facing a felony theft charge after allegedly failing to return library materials borrowed more than 13 years ago.

According to Scott County Court records, Stacey Diehn has been charged with second-degree theft, a Class D felony, in connection with overdue items from the Davenport Public Library located at 3000 Fairmount Street.

Court documents state that Diehn and a relative checked out several materials beginning on April 3, 2012, with the last recorded activity on April 19, 2012. The library reportedly sent multiple notices by mail regarding the overdue items and unpaid fines, eventually turning the matter over to a collection agency.

An arrest affidavit shows Diehn owes $1,117 in unreturned materials, fines, and fees. The document was dated April 17, 2013 — roughly a year after the items were first borrowed.

Diehn was arrested Thursday on a warrant and later released on her own recognizance, court records show. She is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on November 18 in Scott County Court.
