A driver made a shocking discovery on the New York Thruway when they spotted a 4-year-old child walking alone on the highway.
According to the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, two adults — Robert L. Lyman, 31, and Mikayla A. Miller, 30, both of Silver Creek, New York — were arrested and charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
The Incident
Around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, state troopers assigned to the Thruway in the Buffalo area responded to a call on I-90 westbound in Silver Creek after a driver reported seeing a young child near the road.
Police said the driver immediately pulled over, called 911, and helped guide the child away from traffic until troopers arrived.
When officers reached the scene, they confirmed the child was just 4 years old. Investigators later determined that the home of Lyman and Miller was located not far from the Thruway.
Child Protective Services Involvement
Around the same time, Child Protective Services (CPS) made an unannounced visit to the residence and discovered the child was missing. As CPS workers began searching the area, they noticed state police activity nearby and learned the child had been found safe.
Arrests and Investigation
Both Lyman and Miller were taken into custody. Police did not officially confirm their relationship to the child, but local reports indicate they are the child’s parents.
“Child Protective Services are working with the family on the safety of the children,” the New York State Police said in a statement.
The child was reported to be in good health following the incident.
