JOLIET, Ill. — Authorities have identified 48-year-old Timothy Barten of Joliet as the man who died early Saturday after crashing his ATV while fleeing Illinois State Police on Interstate 55 near Black Road.
According to Will County Coroner Laurie Summers, Barten was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. along I-55 southbound at mile marker 235 in Troy Township. The crash occurred as he was allegedly driving the wrong way on the interstate.
Illinois State Police said troopers responded before 5 a.m. to reports of an ATV being driven illegally on I-55 near Route 30. When officers located the vehicle, the driver sped away and collided with an oncoming vehicle, police said.
Barten died at the scene. An autopsy was completed Sunday, and the final cause and manner of death will be determined after further toxicology and police reports are reviewed.
The Illinois State Police continue to investigate the incident.
