Bettendorf Man Sentenced for Shooting Police Officer

A Bettendorf man arrested in July for shooting at a Bettendorf police officer standing in front of three children in May has been sentenced.

Jamey Myles, 24, pleaded guilty to attempted murder of a police officer, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, assault on persons in certain occupations using or displaying a weapon, domestic abuse assault impeding air or blood flow, and child endangerment. Prosecutors dropped additional charges, including another count of assault on persons in certain occupations using or displaying a weapon, domestic abuse assault with a weapon, and two more counts of child endangerment.

Myles received a sentence of up to 25 years in the Iowa Department of Corrections for the attempted murder charge and is ineligible for parole or work release. He also received a 10-year sentence and a $1,370 fine for intimidation with a weapon, five years for assault on a person in a protected occupation, five years for domestic abuse, and two years for child endangerment. All sentences will run concurrently, meaning at the same time.

Police were called to a domestic disturbance on May 21. While officers were removing the children from the home, one officer encountered Myles, who was armed, on the basement stairs. Despite being ordered to drop his weapon, Myles turned toward the officer, raised his gun, and fired twice, hitting the officer who was protecting the children. A second officer was also injured in the exchange. Officers returned fire, wounding Myles.

After an investigation, the Scott County Attorney’s Office concluded that the officers’ use of force was justified.
