JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As cold weather sweeps across the region, firefighters are warning residents to avoid unsafe heating practices that often lead to house fires.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department reports an increase in fire calls whenever temperatures drop sharply, largely because of improper home heating methods. With temperatures expected to fall into the upper 20s and low 30s this week across Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida, officials are urging homeowners to take precautions.
“Whether it’s a liquid fuel heater or an electric one, it’s important to follow all safety measures,” said Damian Bell, Deputy Division Chief of Fire Prevention.
Bell also advised residents to avoid using old or defective heating appliances that have outlived their safe operating lifespan.
