HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — With an arctic blast bringing freezing temperatures to much of the eastern U.S., officials in one Florida county are opening warming shelters to help residents stay safe from the cold.
At least six shelters across Hillsborough County will open on Monday, November 10, and Tuesday, November 11, to provide warmth and shelter during the cold snap.
Felicia Crosby-Rucker, director of Homeless and Community Services for the county, said officials are seeking additional community and faith-based partners to expand shelter options.
The Forecast
Temperatures in Tampa are expected to fall to near freezing Monday night, with wind chills dipping below 40 degrees — a threshold that triggers the activation of warming shelters in the area.
Meteorologists say this early taste of winter highlights how quickly the transition from autumn to winter can occur when atmospheric patterns align.
Residents are advised to:
-
Check home heating systems to ensure they’re working properly.
-
Protect exposed pipes from freezing.
-
Dress in warm, layered clothing to prevent hypothermia and frostbite.
The cold pattern is expected to persist for several days before gradually easing as the jet stream shifts northward later in the week.
