MOUNT VERNON, Ky. — Authorities say a Rockcastle County man left his mother in horrific conditions, confined to a recliner chair for two months inside a rotting, trash-filled home, where she was discovered with wounds, maggots, and dried bugs covering her body.
Jeremy Cook, 38, faces charges of knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult following the shocking discovery inside their Mount Vernon residence on Willow Tree Lane.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by WLEX, Rockcastle County EMS responded to Cook’s home on Oct. 20 after he reported that his mother was experiencing shortness of breath. When emergency workers arrived, they found her sitting in a recliner wearing a feces-filled diaper that appeared to have gone unchanged for days. The home was filled with piles of trash, and the floorboards were rotting and filled with holes.
EMS workers reported that maggots were crawling on both the woman and the chair, and it appeared she had not moved from the recliner in two months. After being taken to the hospital, medical staff found multiple open wounds and dried insects across her body.
Cook, who told police he had been caring for his mother since August, claimed he changed her diapers three times a day and bathed her twice a week. However, investigators said the evidence contradicted his statements.
He was arrested on Oct. 31 and later released after posting a $50,000 bond. Cook is now awaiting his next court appearance as the investigation continues.
