PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A 21-year-old Florida woman was arrested after deputies said she was driving 107 mph in a 55 mph zone while rushing to pick up pizza before the restaurant closed.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Yazmin Erazo, from Holiday, was pulled over Thursday night on U.S. Highway 19 in Palm Harbor. Deputies said she told them she was speeding to reach Little Caesars before closing time.
Erazo was charged under Florida’s new dangerous and excessive speeding law (HB 351), which took effect on July 1. She was later released on bail.
The new law makes it a criminal offense for drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 50 mph or drive 100 mph or more in a way that endangers others.
For a first offense, penalties include up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both. Repeat offenses can lead to up to 90 days in jail and $1,000 in fines, and drivers risk losing their licenses for 180 days to one year if a second violation occurs within five years.
Since this is a criminal charge, a conviction can appear on background checks, potentially affecting employment, housing, and professional licensing.
Florida has seen a 43% increase in traffic fatalities from 2013 to 2023, with most speed-related deaths involving male drivers aged 16 to 25, according to state data.
