Three Central IL hospitals receive D, F grades from national review organization

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Nine hospitals across Central Illinois received new grades, and three of them earned either a D or an F.

The Leapfrog Group, an online organization that evaluates hospitals nationwide, recently released its Fall 2025 review. The group conducts two evaluations each year — one in the spring and one in the fall — using data that hospitals self-report. That information includes infection rates, surgery issues, error-prevention practices, safety concerns, and staff performance.

The Leapfrog Group evaluated 32 criteria. Hospitals did not report data for three of them, but of the remaining 29, they scored average or worse than average in more than two-thirds of the categories.

Since Spring 2022, two hospitals have shown steady declines. Carle fell from an A to a D, and St. Mary’s dropped from a C to an F. HSHS St. John’s held steady at a C until Fall 2024, when its grade slipped to a D.

In contrast, the highest grade earned by any Central Illinois hospital was a B, awarded to Decatur Memorial Hospital. Rated at a D one year ago, the hospital has improved its score in every review since then.

In the latest review, Decatur Memorial scored better than average on nearly half of the 32 criteria.
