Miami-Dade Commissioner Raquel Regalado to lead roundtable discussion on solving homeless crisis

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado will host a roundtable discussion Monday in Homestead with several city leaders to explore solutions for the county’s homelessness crisis.

The discussion comes after Regalado’s visit to Chapman Partnership South, a nonprofit that provides services for unhoused individuals in Miami and Homestead. She will also serve meals to families at the facility.

The roundtable is scheduled at Chapman Partnership South, located at 28205 SW 124th Court in Homestead.

Those invited to join the conversation on homelessness include Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago, South Miami Mayor Javier Fernandez, Pinecrest Mayor Joseph Corradino, Palmetto Bay Mayor Karen Cunningham, Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott, and Homestead Mayor Steve Losner.

“As we enter the holiday season, it’s crucial that we come together as a community to support our most vulnerable residents,” Regalado said. “This event is an opportunity to not only provide direct assistance but also to collaborate on effective, long-term solutions to homelessness in South Miami-Dade County.”

The Homeless Trust will brief county and city officials on the current state of homelessness in Miami-Dade.

Regalado will also present a check to Chapman Partnership South as part of Give Miami Day, a countywide fundraiser organized by the Miami Foundation.

Ron Book, Chairman of the Homeless Trust, said the holidays are a time to recognize organizations that support “the least, last, lost and forgotten” in the community. He added that the Homeless Trust, Chapman Partnership, and other nonprofits are committed to working with local leaders and residents to reduce and ultimately end homelessness.

Earlier this year, the Homeless Trust reported a 17% year-over-year drop in unsheltered homelessness. The total number of sheltered and unsheltered individuals was 3,728, a 2% overall decrease. About 77% of people experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade were sheltered.
