Woman Missing for 14 Years Found Alive in Another State, Iowa Police Say

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says a woman reported missing 14 years ago has been found alive in another state.

According to investigators, the case began in 2011 when the then-54-year-old disappeared while visiting family in southern Iowa. She and her partner had traveled from South Carolina, but during the visit, they became separated and she vanished.

Police said the case offered few details, no evidence of a crime, and no leads, eventually turning cold. She was later entered into the nationwide missing person database.

During a scheduled audit of the Communications Center, the case was reassigned to a detective and an investigative assistant. They reviewed the file and used updated technology to follow new leads, eventually tracing the woman to Nebraska, where they found her alive and safe.

Investigators determined her disappearance in 2011 was voluntary, according to the DMPD.

“Closing a case doesn’t always bring the closure that loved ones hope for, but we hope we bring some peace of mind by answering the question, ‘What happened,’” Sgt. Paul Parizek said in a press release.
