‘Gut-wrenching’ video shows mom, children attacked by mob of kids outside Chicago school

A horrifying viral video shows a mother and her two young children being brutally attacked by a mob of kids outside a Chicago elementary school.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the disturbing footage, which has been viewed millions of times on X, calling it “deeply” troubling and “gut-wrenching.”

Corshawnda Hatter, 33, identified herself as the mother in the video. She said she was cornered and attacked while walking home Monday with her 9-year-old son and younger daughter from Orville Bright Elementary School on the city’s South Side.

The mom and her children were attacked as they walked home from the school. She was seen trying to shield her terrified kids from a group of students who hurled insults and blocked their path. Moments later, the three were thrown to the ground, punched, and kicked repeatedly.

During the attack, the mother’s wig was ripped off. One of the assailants yelled, “Beat his ass!” as her son tried to escape.

“They were literally waiting along the way we walked home, just to jump all of us,” Hatter told reporters outside the school on Tuesday, according to WGN-TV.

“They followed us all the way there. They hit my son first, dragged me in the grass, and pulled my baby’s hair,” she said of her younger daughter.

Hatter and her 9-year-old son were taken to Trinity Hospital with serious injuries. Officials did not say whether her daughter needed medical care.

The attack remains under investigation, and Chicago police said no arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning.

The mother said her son had been bullied at the school for more than two years and claimed the administration did nothing to protect him, Fox 32 reported.

Hatter met with school administrators and city leaders on Tuesday to discuss the beating. “I’m trying to get justice for my son,” she said.

Local residents told CBS News that unruly kids have been a long-standing issue in the area. “This is not the first time the kids have done this,” one parent said. “Just talk around the streets that these kids have pretty much been raising themselves, and they have not been held accountable. They have vandalized cars. They have harassed adults and children.”

Mayor Johnson condemned the attack, saying he was “deeply disturbed to see the video of young people attacking a mother and her child on the Far South Side yesterday afternoon. That type of behavior is unacceptable in our city and we must not normalize that type of senseless violence.”

Chicago Public Schools said it was “horrified” by the attack and is supporting the Hatter family. It has not confirmed whether any of the students involved have been disciplined.
