A massive Thanksgiving storm is set to disrupt holiday travel for nearly 82 million people next week.
Floridians traveling within the state likely won’t notice much bad weather, but anyone leaving the Sunshine State may face delays depending on their travel day.
According to AccuWeather, the cross-country storm will begin moving across the U.S. from the Southwest over the weekend.
The worst part of the storm is expected from Austin, Texas, to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Little Rock, Arkansas, on Monday, Nov. 24, though much of the Central U.S. will feel the effects.
The Florida Panhandle will sit on the storm’s edge on Tuesday and see more direct but moderate impacts by Wednesday. AccuWeather forecasts warm conditions for Thanksgiving Day in the Panhandle with a 55% chance of showers.
How Florida will be impacted by the Thanksgiving storm
The storm will move out of Texas and the southern Plains on Tuesday, spreading heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms across the Mississippi Valley, according to AccuWeather.
“The best chance of severe weather will be in the South Central states,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.
While the Florida Peninsula will avoid the worst of the system, Panhandle and North Florida travelers heading out on Wednesday—typically the busiest day before Thanksgiving—may encounter problems.
“Expect another few quick-hitting systems on the heels of one another Tuesday into Wednesday (potentially into early Thursday),” the National Weather Service office in Mobile, Alabama, wrote in its latest forecast discussion.
The NWS added that “the worst case scenario is that lingering rain showers clear out of the area through the morning on Thanksgiving. Given the strong pressure gradient, it could be windy on Thanksgiving.”
