Woman crossing street on her lunch break mowed down and killed by Honda Accord driver: Cops

A woman in Pennsylvania was struck and killed on Thanksgiving while taking her lunch break, and police say the driver responsible sped off and crashed into another vehicle, injuring the motorist.

Rosa Mar Espinosa Rodas, 41, was crossing Market Street at 36th Street in Philadelphia when Shamir Miller, 30, hit her with his 2012 Honda Accord and drove away, according to CBS affiliate KYW. Miller reportedly kept going down Market Street and, just two blocks later near 34th Street, struck a 2013 Buick LaCrosse, KYW reported.

After hitting the Buick, police say Miller got out of the Accord and tried to run from the scene. Officers chased him on foot and took him into custody near 32nd and Market Streets, according to KYW.

Paramedics responded quickly after the hit-and-run, but Espinosa Rodas could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Buick driver was hospitalized with neck and back injuries and was listed in stable condition over the weekend.

Reports indicate Espinosa Rodas worked near the intersection where she was hit and had just left her job to take her lunch break. Nicaraguan media outlets, including Articulo 66 and Pixel Channel Nicaragua, describe her as a native of Nicaragua who was living and working in Philadelphia. Those outlets, along with local ABC affiliate WPVI, allege that Miller was speeding and driving recklessly before the incident. Police have not released details on what caused the crashes.

Her family is reportedly trying to raise money to return her body to Nicaragua for burial.

Miller faces charges including murder, homicide by vehicle, and aggravated assault in connection with the two incidents. His next court date has not yet been announced.
