FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 59-year-old man accused of raping a man with disabilities remained at the Broward County Main Jail on Sunday afternoon, according to records.
Fort Lauderdale police arrested Paul John on Thursday, and a judge denied him bond during his court appearance, where he wore a suicide prevention vest.
Officers met the victim on Dec. 8, 2024, at Imperial Point Hospital’s emergency room. He told police he was in pain following the rape.
According to investigators, the victim — who shares his phone location with his mother — was walking to Walgreens on Dec. 6, 2024, when John approached him in a Chevrolet Camaro.
Police said John “offered” him a job, took him to lunch, spoke with his mother — who asked him to be patient with the victim’s disabilities — and then brought him to his home in Fort Lauderdale.
John reportedly paid the victim $15 to clean his boat, took him to play pool at a gay strip club in Flagler Village, showed him a gun, brought him back home, and raped him, police said.
The victim later told his mother’s boyfriend and a detective that he feared for his life, according to the arrest report.
Police said John had faced similar allegations in a different incident.
He was charged with sexual battery against a victim who is mentally defective or incapacitated, according to records.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about this case or others to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 to remain anonymous.
