Sheriff’s office releases body-cam video from deputy in fatal Miami-Dade shootout

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage Monday showing a deputy shooting an armed man during a September shootout in Goulds.

The footage captures Sgt. Gilberto Crespo, a 19-year department veteran, approaching a Honda minivan outside a small grocery store at Southwest 216th Street and 122nd Avenue around 7:40 p.m. on Sept. 16, with his gun drawn. Crespo was responding to reports that 44-year-old Jose Pineda Jr. was pointing a gun at people.

The video shows Crespo repeatedly ordering Pineda to show his hands. Pineda responded, “I ain’t got no hands,” before the sergeant opened fire. Crespo initially advanced while shooting, then retreated behind a silver Chevy pickup while continuing to fire as gunshots came from Pineda’s van.

Crespo fired over 20 rounds at the vehicle, changed magazines, and fired three more shots. Radio communications show Crespo alerting other deputies: “Shots fired” and “Watch for crossfire, he’s armed!”

When deputies reached the van, they found Pineda outside with a handgun beside him. He was taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities noted that Pineda had a long criminal history.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the footage was released to uphold transparency and public trust, allowing the public to see the sequence of events as they occurred.
