CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Illinois State Police troopers responded to hundreds of incidents over the past few days as winter weather continued to create hazardous driving conditions across Central Illinois.
According to State Police, Troops 5–7 and 9 — which cover the Central Illinois region — handled the following incidents from Saturday through Monday:
• Motorist assists: 666
• Property damage-only crashes: 172
• Personal injury crashes: 23
Officials explained that a motorist assist includes any situation that isn’t a crash. Examples include sliding off into a ditch without damage or injury, flat tires, engine trouble, or any issue that leaves a driver stranded and needing help on the roadside.
State Police noted that the majority of motorist assists during this storm were related to vehicles sliding off icy or snow-covered roads.
