Jewelry store employee arrested after swiping over $100K in months-long heist, police say

MIAMI (WSVN) — A jewelry store employee allegedly spent several months stealing items from her workplace before selling them at pawn shops, Miami Police report.

Authorities say 45-year-old Nubia Torres took small pieces of jewelry from a store in Miami’s jewelry district near Northeast First Street and North Miami Avenue. The store’s owner noticed missing items in early September and reviewed security footage, prompting a call to police.

Investigators said that between June and August, Torres was captured on camera repeatedly rearranging jewelry boxes in the store’s back room while “systematically removing pieces of high-value jewelry in small amounts to avoid detection.” She would then return to her desk and hide the stolen items in her purse.

Among the items she is accused of stealing are links from a Cuban link chain valued at more than $100,000, along with several gold bracelets. Detectives say she sold the stolen items at pawn shops.

Bodycam footage shows officers taking Torres into custody on Sept. 9. She faces multiple charges, including grand theft and dealing with stolen property.

Although a judge set her bond, Torres remains in custody on an immigration hold.
