Florida residents dealing with winter temperatures will get a short break this weekend before another cold front arrives.
A new cold front reached Orlando on Thursday, cooling down the state through the afternoon. Highs were expected to reach the mid-60s north of Orlando and the upper 60s to low 70s across Central Florida, according to News 6.
Thursday morning brought temperatures in the mid-40s to low 50s, with even colder air expected Friday morning, when lows are forecast to fall into the low to mid-40s.
Parts of northern Florida are under a freeze watch from Thursday night through Friday morning as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing, according to the National Weather Service.
The frigid conditions come from a wave of Arctic air driven by a weakened polar vortex, pushing temperatures well below normal across much of the United States and reaching as far south as Florida, Newsweek reports.
The weekend will bring a warm-up, with temperatures returning to the mid-to-upper 70s. Scattered showers are expected Saturday night and may continue into Sunday.
However, by late Sunday, winter weather will snap back as another cold front approaches early next week. High pressure will build quickly behind the front, bringing northeast winds.
After highs in the mid-to-upper 70s on Sunday, temperatures are expected to cool again, with afternoon highs in the upper 60s early next week.
Unlike many other parts of the country, Florida will not see any snowfall this week.
The forecast follows AccuWeather meteorologists’ outlook for a Midwest cold snap stretching eastward. “We believe that two to three more rounds of intense cold are possible from the Midwest to much of the East, spanning Dec. 10 to 19,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok told the Tallahassee Democrat. “There is a chance for a frost or freeze late next week as far south as central Florida.”
Rain moved through Florida on Dec. 8, bringing light or scattered downpours and southwest wind gusts of up to 30 mph. The Panhandle and North Florida saw temperatures fall to the low to mid-50s on Monday before plunging into the upper 20s to low 30s by early Tuesday morning.
