Months after a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a Miami-Dade family’s home, severely burning a teenage victim, authorities said the man believed to be responsible for the attack has been taken into custody.
Yang L. Chiong, 36, was arrested Thursday on seven counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree arson conspiracy, the arrest report shows.
The alleged attack happened around 10 p.m. on March 25 at a home in the 27000 block of Southwest 143rd Place.
According to the report, one victim said he was in his bedroom when he heard glass shatter and what sounded like an explosion, followed by his niece screaming.
He said he found his niece and parts of the living room engulfed in flames, while two nephews who were also in the room were not injured.
Other family members put out the fire, and the injured teen was taken outside, where flames were extinguished with a hose.
A teenage girl was left in intensive care after a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a Southwest Miami-Dade home Tuesday night, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and her uncle. She was driven by her father to Homestead Hospital and later airlifted to NCA Kendall Hospital’s Burn Unit with burns covering about 45% of her body, the report said.
A family dog was also injured, and the uncle suffered blisters on his hand and leg while trying to put out the flames on his niece.
Multiple children, including a 2-year-old, were inside the home at the time but were not injured, according to the report.
Inside the house, investigators found pieces of glass from a mason-style jar with a partially burned wick in the lid, along with a hole in a window.
The victim’s cousin told investigators she had been in a tumultuous relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Chiong, and that the two share a child, the report said.
A teenage girl remains in intensive care after a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a Southwest Miami-Dade home Tuesday night. NBC6’s Laura Rodriguez reported on the case.
The cousin said Chiong had previously been arrested for domestic violence in Miami-Dade and has another domestic abuse case in Monroe County. She told investigators she believed the attack happened because he was angry she would not drop the criminal charges against him, the report said.
The attack was captured by a nearby home’s camera. The footage showed a suspect wearing dark clothing arriving in a white vehicle and throwing a flaming object through the home’s window, followed by a “sudden large burst of fire,” according to the report.
Investigators traced where the jar was purchased and identified the buyer as Chiong’s nephew, the report said.
Detectives also recovered text messages allegedly sent by Chiong. One message read, “I’m on a mission to find a way to get revenge,” while another stated, “Im telling you I want that b—- life miserable,” according to the report.
Chiong was arrested, booked into jail, and appeared before a judge on Friday.
During the hearing, his defense attorney said Chiong was wearing a GPS ankle monitor and that his whereabouts were known. The attorney also argued that the person who claimed Chiong threw the Molotov cocktail had little credibility.
The judge ordered Chiong held without bond until his next appearance before a division judge.
