The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Maryland, citing a fast-moving winter system that will bring snow and low temperatures late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The alert is in force for the central and northern areas of the state, including the Baltimore-Washington region, from 8 p.m. Saturday until approximately 7 a.m. Sunday. Snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are forecast, with some areas in northern Maryland and the Baltimore area seeing up to 4-5 inches.
A secondary advisory for Calvert and Charles counties extends from midnight Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, with comparable snowfall and hazardous traffic concerns.
According to forecasts, precipitation will begin as rain or a wintry mix before rapidly converting to snow as temperatures fall. A narrow band of heavier precipitation may cause brief bouts of moderate to heavy snowfall overnight, making travel problematic in certain regions.
Meteorologists warn that roadways may turn slick early Sunday, especially on untreated surfaces, and visibility may be limited during peak snow bands. The caution also applies to sections of western Maryland, where strong winds and colder air will accompany the snowfall.
Residents are warned to follow weather updates and prepare for slippery conditions, especially on Sunday morning, when many commuters will be on the road. Local school and government closures or delays may be notified, depending on how conditions unfold overnight.
