Residents in southern Arizona should expect a substantially colder night tonight, with low temperatures in the 30s and 40s across much of the region, according to the National Weather Service in Tucson.
The National Weather Service predicts the coldest overnight temperatures between 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday, with lower desert settlements experiencing lows in the upper 40s to low 50s and higher altitudes and remote locations dropping closer to the mid-30s. Temperatures around Willcox could fall to approximately 35 degrees, while Benson is anticipated to hit the upper 30s.
Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, Green Valley, Sierra Vista, Safford, and Globe will all have lower-than-average nightly lows. Phoenix is expected to bottom out in the mid-50s, while regions farther east and south will be cooler.
In addition to the cold temperatures, breezy weather is forecast on Sunday night. Peak wind gusts are expected to range between 15 and 25 mph, with greater gusts likely east of Tucson and near the Arizona-New Mexico border. While not damaging, the winds may cause temperatures to feel cooler tonight.
The National Weather Service advises residents to dress in layers, especially if they want to be outside late at night or early Monday morning. Residents of cooler rural areas should take steps to preserve sensitive plants, pets, and outdoor plumbing.
While no hard freeze warnings are currently posted for most lower elevations, officials advise cold-sensitive groups to take care, especially overnight and around daybreak.
Temperatures are predicted to rise somewhat during the day Monday, although mornings will remain cold throughout southern Arizona.
