Nevada begins the morning calmly, but circumstances will shortly change as powerful winds sweep throughout the Reno area. By sunset, southwest winds blow through valleys and passes, causing loose items and making movement more difficult.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory for western Nevada and adjoining eastern California from 10 p.m. tonight until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are forecast, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. Winds could reach 60 mph in windy regions such as Washoe Valley and Pyramid Lake.
Drivers on I-80, U.S. 395, and open highways should be prepared for abrupt crosswinds, particularly tonight and Wednesday morning. High-profile automobiles are at the most risk. Blowing debris and downed tree limbs may temporarily obstruct highways or cause isolated power outages.
Temperatures in December continue to be moderate, beginning around 38 degrees and rising to the mid-to-upper 50s today and Wednesday. While no snow is anticipated in Reno, light rain is possible at times, perhaps adding slick pavement to already hazardous driving conditions.
Winds peak early Wednesday and gradually subside by late afternoon. By Thursday, calmer conditions return, with largely sunny skies and highs around 62 degrees, providing a brief respite from the unpredictable weather.
Looking ahead five days, rain is expected to return on Friday and into the weekend. Snow levels range between 7,200 and 8,600 feet, therefore valley sites are currently rain-only. Still, cooler evenings in the 30s increase the risk of slick roads or black ice in the early morning hours, particularly after rain.
Secure any loose outdoor goods today, plan additional travel time, and keep weather-aware as the December weather stays active.
