Boise & Idaho Weather Alert: 55 MPH Wind Gusts Expected Through Wednesday

Idaho wakes to rattling windows and bending trees as December weather goes active in the Treasure Valley. Today, gusty gusts swept through Boise, pushing unsecured things and making navigation more challenging, particularly on exposed roads and highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a Wind Advisory is in force from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday for the Upper Treasure Valley and Western Magic Valley, which includes Boise and Twin Falls. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are forecast, with gusts reaching 55 mph at times.

Drivers may notice unexpected crosswinds on open parts of I-84, especially in the late morning and afternoon. High-profile automobiles are at the most risk. Power outages are expected if winds knock down vulnerable tree limbs. Residents should start securing holiday decorations, garbage cans, and loose outside items early today.

Temperatures continue to be moderate for mid-December, lingering in the low 50s today. Rain possibilities increase as the wind dies down Wednesday afternoon. Wet pavement could remain until Wednesday night, creating hazardous conditions if temperatures go below freezing.

By Thursday, rain has moved throughout southwest Idaho. While little snow is forecast in the valley, adjacent mountain passes may receive accumulation. That increases early winter travel concerns for individuals leaving town or returning from vacations. At higher elevations, expect poor visibility and frequently changing road conditions.

Looking ahead, the extended five-day forecast predicts continuous rain through Friday, with highs in the mid-40s to mid-50s. Nighttime lows drop into the 30s, raising the risk of black ice on untreated roadways, particularly during early morning drives.
