Threat Prompts Lockdowns at Florida Schools as Armed Suspect Drives Cross-Country

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CBS12) — An online threat aimed at a child’s school led to lockdowns at four Florida schools as deputies tracked an armed man driving across the country toward Jacksonville.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Matthew Piner posted a message on social media stating that “anyone possessing or keeping [his child] from me is to be shot on sight.”

Investigators said Piner does not have custody of the child, who attends a Jacksonville public school.

Authorities later learned that Piner was driving from California to Jacksonville while armed on Monday. In response, deputies placed four schools on lockdown as a precaution while monitoring the situation.

The sheriff’s office is urging the public to report suspicious online activity by calling 904-630-0500.
