Davenport, IA – As winter temperatures drop across the Quad Cities, the Davenport Police Department is warning residents about the dangers of leaving vehicles unattended while warming them up.
The department’s new campaign, Lock It Down QC, emphasizes that it only takes seconds for thieves to steal a running vehicle—even if the driver has a key fob.
“Everyone likes getting into a warm vehicle during the winter months,” police said in a social media post. “But it only takes a second for a thief to steal an unattended vehicle that is left running.”
Police advise drivers to:
-
Never leave a car running unattended.
-
Always lock your vehicle, even if it’s in your driveway.
-
Never leave keys inside the car.
Authorities have noted seasonal spikes in vehicle thefts linked to unattended cars during cold weather. The campaign serves as a reminder that even quick stops or errands can present opportunities for theft.
