Illinois Officers Crawl Under Burning Car to Rescue Trapped Driver on Interstate 88

In a dramatic early-morning rescue, Illinois police officers crawled beneath a burning, overturned car to save a trapped driver after a high-speed crash on Interstate 88.

The incident occurred around 3:40 a.m. when an Oak Brook police officer spotted a sedan speeding without headlights on Route 83. As the officer pursued the vehicle onto eastbound I-88, he came across the sedan, which had rolled over and was engulfed in flames in the engine compartment. The driver, the car’s only occupant, remained trapped inside.

Dashcam Footage Shows Heroic Effort
Police dashcam video captures officers using fire extinguishers to control the flames while crawling under the wrecked vehicle to reach the driver. They successfully pulled the motorist to safety, demonstrating quick thinking and bravery under life-threatening conditions.

Both the driver and two responding officers sustained minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, and were treated at a local hospital before being released.

Authorities confirmed that the crashed vehicle was the same one initially seen speeding. Illinois State Police are now handling the ongoing crash investigation.

Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis praised the officers, saying, “There is no doubt that their actions saved this individual’s life. I am grateful that only minor injuries were sustained, and I could not be more proud of their bravery and professionalism.”
