Massachusetts Braces for 1–3 Inches of Snow on Winter Solstice Tuesday

Drivers in Massachusetts should brace themselves for treacherous roads on Tuesday as a period of heavy snow begins in the morning and continues into the evening, disrupting one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, there is increasing confidence that much of interior Massachusetts will receive 1 to 3 inches of snow, with localized totals around 4 inches in higher terrain. Snowfall quantities will be lower near the southern coast, with an inch or less forecast.

According to forecasters, snow will begin Tuesday morning and gradually spread across the region before tapering off by Tuesday evening. While most regions will experience snow, precipitation may mix with or short transition to rain south and east of the Interstate 95 corridor, limiting accumulations closer to the coast.

The largest snowfall amounts are forecast in inland villages throughout Worcester County, Franklin County, and the higher altitudes of western and central Massachusetts, including locations in the Berkshires. Although the Boston metro area is forecast to see lower totals, slick conditions may persist during peak travel hours.

The National Weather Service warns of slick travel conditions, particularly during morning and evening commutes. Even minor snowfall could cause delays on key roads such as Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), I-93, and I-95.

Residents are recommended to allow extra travel time, limit speeds, and remain up to current on local predictions because snowfall levels might vary by area. Air travelers should also keep track of their flight status, as slight delays are conceivable.
