Showers, Isolated Thunderstorms Possible Sunday in Missouri and Illinois

Rain is expected to increase across eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois on Sunday, with a few thunderstorms possible as a cold front sweeps through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the slower-than-expected progress of a cold front has increased the risk of showers, which are now predicted at 50 to 70 percent, with a 20 to 30 percent possibility of thunderstorms. The change represents a rather recent projected development.

Forecasters warn that confidence in storm coverage and possible strength remains low, owing to the quick development of the prediction and uncertainty surrounding the front’s timing. While some locations may get consistent rain, others may only receive brief or scattered showers.

The National Weather Service cautions that the forecast will be updated as additional information becomes available. Residents in the St. Louis metro region, as well as nearby communities in eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois, are asked to stay tuned for updates, especially if they have outdoor plans on Sunday.

Those traveling or planning activities should be prepared for shifting circumstances and weather alerts as the cold front approaches.
