Snow Warning Issued for New York and Massachusetts; 6 Inches Possible

Drivers in Eastern New York and Western Massachusetts should prepare for deteriorating traffic conditions. Friday evening, a winter storm sends significant snow to the area.

The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Schoharie Valley, northeast Catskills, and Berkshire County, Massachusetts, from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters predict 4 to 6 inches of snowfall, which will greatly impede traffic.

Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Clifton Park, Amsterdam, Gloversville, Johnstown, Cobleskill, Middleburgh, Herkimer, Pittsfield, North Adams, and Great Barrington are among the communities covered by the advisory, which spans eastern New York and western Massachusetts.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will fall from west to east around or shortly after sundown on Friday, coinciding with the Friday evening commute. Periods of light to moderate snow are likely to continue overnight, with snowfall progressively decreasing Saturday morning.

Roads are predicted to become snow-covered and hazardous, especially in the evenings and overnight. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces may become dangerous fast if temperatures remain low enough for consistent buildup.

Officials ask drivers to slow down, increase their following distance, and allow extra travel time on Friday night. Pedestrians should be cautious on walkways and steps as snow accumulates.

Residents are asked to keep an eye out for updated forecasts and cautions as the system moves forward and road conditions change on Saturday.
