Charleston, South Carolina: Wind Chills Drop to 25°F Tuesday Morning

Cold weather is expected to return to coastal South Carolina and southeast Georgia late Monday night when a powerful cold front passes through, bringing markedly cooler air and low wind chills by Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Charleston predicts wind chills in the lower to mid-20s away from the beaches early Tuesday. Coastal areas are likely to be marginally milder, while inland areas will see the coldest temperatures.

Minimum wind chills in Charleston are expected to be around 25°F, but wind chills in communities further inland, such as Columbia and Beaufort, could be in the low 20s. Forecasters predict wind chills of 20°F or lower in southeast Georgia, including Savannah and Statesboro, by Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service said that a Cold Weather Advisory may be required in some regions depending on how temperatures and winds change overnight. As the front moves offshore, milder weather will be followed by colder weather.

The agency’s maps show the highest likelihood of advisory-level wind chills in rural South Carolina and Georgia, but immediate coastal locations may avoid the coldest readings owing to the marine effect.

Residents are encouraged to adopt cold weather measures, particularly in the early morning hours. Dress in layers, protect exposed skin, and bring pets indoors. Those with early commutes or outside jobs should be prepared for an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous cold.

While the harshest wind chills are expected Tuesday morning, temperatures will gradually soften later in the day when the sun returns.
