North Carolina Braces for Strong Winds with Gusts Up to 60 MPH

Damaging mountain winds are anticipated to hit northwest North Carolina starting Monday afternoon, triggering a High Wind Warning in Avery County.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a High Wind Warning for Avery County, which includes Banner Elk, Newland, and Ingalls, from 1 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. EST Tuesday.

Forecasters predict northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, particularly in exposed peaks and higher elevations. These winds are strong enough to bring down trees and electricity lines, potentially causing extensive power outages.

Travel can become hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles like tractor-trailers, RVs, and delivery trucks. Sudden gusts and crosswinds may make driving difficult on mountain roads, bridges, and long sections of roadway.

The National Weather Service warns of the expected worst winds from Monday afternoon into the night, which will gradually diminish by Tuesday morning as the warning ends. Mountain residents need to prepare for potential road jams, fallen limbs, and blown debris.

Officials advise households to secure outside items, such as holiday decorations and lightweight furniture, before the winds worsen. Those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment should assess backup plans in case of disruptions.

During peak wind periods, drivers should refrain from unnecessary driving, moderate their speed, and remain vigilant for any damage to trees or power lines.
